Qantas is opening a new “Product Innovation Centre” in Adelaide that aims to increase the quality, design, and functionality of its digital systems.
Qantas says that the centre will amplify the customer experience through improving the functionality of the Qantas app, enhancing check-in services, and strengthening baggage tracking. An AI tool that will “help when travel doesn’t go to plan” will also be developed; however, no specifics on the features of this have been provided.

“Innovation has been a core part of the airline’s DNA for more than 100 years. This Centre marks a new chapter in our efforts to reimagine the travel experience for the millions of customers who fly with us,” said Qantas Group CEO, Vanessa Hudson.
“Technology and AI is critical to lifting the customer experience at every part of the journey, from booking to inflight and baggage collection. This new hub will bring the best Australian skilled talent together to build digital products and experiences that make travel easier and more personalised.”
Backed by the South Australian Government, the centre is set to open in March next year and is projected to create more than four hundred “high-skilled technology roles”. The CBD centre will be where Qantas’ technology product development teams, product managers, digital designers, software engineers, and data and AI specialists will be located.
According to South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas, the “historic” agreement will boost capacity in the skilled tech workforce in the state.
“We are building a strong pipeline of talent with advanced AI and digital skillsets,” he said.
“This initiative will ensure South Australia remains at the forefront of emerging technologies and future workforce opportunities.”
The centre will also see Qantas partner with Adelaide university to create graduate pathways for students to apply the new skills in digital, technology, and engineering fields.
Professor Jessica Gallagher, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (External Engagement) at Adelaide University, said:
“Qantas and Adelaide University share a mutual interest in driving innovation and technological advancements, especially in the field of AI, supporting workforce development and contributing to the long-term future of Australia’s aviation sector.”
This latest announcement is part of a string of investments Qantas is making in South Australia, including the recent opening of a lounge in Adelaide Airport and re-introducing flights from Adelaide to Auckland.
